Two tires in dry sand off Pacific Coast Highway is not a fender-bender on the 10. It is a winch-out on a beach or a shoulder that turns to sand, at Zuma, Dockweiler, El Matador, or a Malibu turnout. The car is often undamaged. It still will not roll. Spinning it deeper is how a day at the beach becomes a recovery.

Sand on PCH is a different job from a freeway crash

Our freeway crash towing page is for collisions on CHP highways. This page is for a car that left the pavement on purpose or by a few feet and now sits in sand, a soft shoulder, or a beach lot that is not a paved stall.

PCH through Malibu is a state highway in stretches and a coastal road in others. Dockweiler is County beach parking off Vista del Mar, with jets from LAX overhead. Zuma is a wide County beach with a lot that still dumps into sand at the edges. El Matador and the smaller Malibu pull-offs are dirt, bluff, and a short walk to the water. A car that “just hopped the curb” at those places is often high-centered or buried to the sills.

A light wrecker with no winch is the wrong truck. A wheel-lift that cannot get a yoke under a buried tire is the wrong truck. The operator we connect you with sizes a winch-out from the sand, the slope, and whether the tide or the bluff is in play. Quick Tow LA does not own a fleet. We do not publish a beach rate. No operator with a signed rate card is on file.

If the car already hit another car, a barrier, or a cyclist, stop treating it as a sand recovery. That is accident recovery, and CHP or the local agency may already own the scene.

What to tell dispatch from the sand

Name the beach or the turnout, not only “Malibu.” Zuma, Westward Beach, Point Dume, El Matador, Topanga, Sunset, Dockweiler, Manhattan Beach, or a numbered PCH mile marker. Say which side of the highway. Say how far off the pavement. Say whether the car is on dry sand, wet sand, a dirt shoulder, or a paved lot with sand blown over it.

Say the make and drivetrain. An AWD crossover that dug itself in still needs a winch, and it still needs a flatbed once it is free if two wheels would have to roll. Say if the tide is coming in. Say if anyone is hurt.

Stay out of the travel lane. PCH is fast even when it looks empty. Get people to the inland side of the barrier or onto a packed path, not into live traffic. NHTSA roadside safety is the same here as on a freeway: a stopped car is a crash risk.

Do not stand in the winch line. Do not sit in the car while it is pulled unless the operator tells you to steer. Do not try to tow a friend out with a passenger SUV. That is how two cars sit in the sand.

A published Malibu or County beach after-hours recovery fee, a specific tide-window rule, and a list of which beaches ban wreckers could not be confirmed in our claims file. The County, State Parks, or the highway agency on that stretch sets access. Ask the operator what they can legally enter. Then tell dispatch what the ranger or the officer said, if one is already there.

When CHP, a ranger, or the County directs the scene

PCH is a CHP-served highway in many Malibu stretches. If an officer is already there, they run the scene. The California Highway Patrol Rotation Tow Program may send the wrecker. You do not pick the truck. You follow the officer.

County beaches have their own parking and access rules. A wrecker that cannot drive onto the sand will stage on pavement and pull from there, or will wait for a unit that can. We will not invent a Dockweiler staging map or a Zuma gate code. The person at the lot entrance, or the officer, has the current instruction.

If the car is in a private lot at a beach restaurant or a hotel, that is a private-property problem. CVC 22658 covers posted private-lot tows. A sand recovery you hire yourself is a different invoice from a lot that already called its contract truck.

City of Los Angeles Official Police Garage rates apply when LAPD or LADOT sends the tow. They do not set a private beach winch-out. As of January 1, 2026, the OPG standard-vehicle tow is $220.00 for the first hour at the credit-card rate. That is a City garage figure. It is not a PCH sand price.

After the car is free

Once the car is on pavement, decide whether it can drive. Sand in the brakes, a buried bumper, a packed wheel well, or a transmission that overheated from spinning are reasons to load it, not to drive to Santa Monica. Ask the operator if it is safe to roll. If it is not, name a shop or a lot.

Distance along PCH is still distance. A pull at Zuma and a drop in the Valley is a long-distance tow. Read what counts as a long-distance tow before you assume a local hourly rate covers that drop.

If the car is an EV, it still belongs on a flatbed after the winch. See why Teslas and EVs go on flatbeds.

We will not invent a “Malibu sand surcharge” or a County beach gate fee. Confirm the current charge with the operator before the cable comes off the drum.

When to call us

Call when the car is in sand or a soft shoulder on PCH or a County beach and you still control the hire. The operators we connect you with size the winch from the spot you describe. Call (213) 410-1414 to reach dispatch.
